There’s a fine line between pretentious and hip. Pretentious (and also sort of stupid) would be filling your toddler’s library with museum coffee table books. But introducing him to the board book, The Art of Shapes: For Children and Adults, well that’s something we can get behind.The Art of Shapes, published by Los Angeles’ Museum of Contemporary Art, features a dozen modern works as a way of highlighting basic shapes. Kids will learn to identify squares through Ellsworth Kelly’s work, see ovals in the mangos of Matisse, and spot diamonds in a Jenny Holzer installation.
With any luck your kids will look forward to seeing the real works of art on your next museum outing. Unless they’re like my nephew, who’s really just excited to get to the gift shop.
