I’m not going to knock Thriller, but if you want to grab some fresh new tunes to liven up your Halloween gathering, we’ve got a collection that will have your ghosts and goblins dancing (or lurching) all over the place.
Not too scary and not too sweet, Mondo Zombie Boogaloo is a CD for almost all- age monsters. Featuring three indie greats, Southern Culture on the Skids, The Fleshtones, and Los Straitjackets, this may not be specifically a “kids’ CD” but rest assured that you won’t need to turn down the volume for any questionable lyrics or anything too gruesome. In fact, you may just keep turning this one up, up, up.
Though keep in mind, that some kids–like my son a few years ago–find everything about Halloween scary. So songs like the creepy Demon Death or even a few minor chords played with a scream in the background might keep them up for a week. If that’s the case, you may want to save this one for your grownup Halloween party after the kids go to sleep.
My long-time favorite Southern Culture on the Skids’ Frankenstein-mix of rockabilly, country, and surf-rock offer up cool tunes as the super-fun Goo Goo Muck and the sweetly-sad The Loneliest Ghost in Town. And bassist Mary Huff shows off her great scream in Tingler Blues.
Instrumentalists Los Straitjackets will set the perfect tone for your bash with their slow-dance version of the Theme From Young Frankenstein, and an interpretation of the Halloween theme song which is so creepily awesome, it gives me goosebumps.
Garage-band rockers, and possible zombies since they’ve been playing since the 70’s, The Fleshtones rock out through Dracula A GoGo and Ghoulman Confidential. And lead singer, Peter Zaremba, even makes that old standby Monster Mash sound new in Que Monstrous Son, sung entirely in Spanish. Now that’s some mad science at work. –Christina
